BEIJING, June 20 (TMTPOST) — Ao Ran, Deputy President and Secretary of CADPA (China Audio-video and Digital Publishing Association), said at an industry exchange conference for e-sports that 43% of surveyed parents believed that their children’s playtime for video game had significantly decreased.

With concerted efforts from the government, the association and companies, video game addiction prevention measures were successful in 2021 as over 80% of surveyed parents expressed that their children spent less time on playing video games. 43% of surveyed parents believed that their children spent “significantly less time” on video games.

The 2021 Video Game Industry Public Opinion Report was released at the conference. Ao said that the video game industry in China had been following relevant rules and regulations and receiving positive feedback due to improved game quality. The public"s positive rating toward the video game industry in China had increased to 89.5 in 2021 from 87.8 in 2020. Ao pointed out that the implementation of the Law on the Protection of Minors amended in 2021 helped prevent game addiction. According to Ao, authorities have been paying close attention to the prevention of video game addiction and the protection of minors online and rolling out stricter regulations and rules.

Besides regulations from the authorities, the public also started to call for families to take responsibilities in preventing video game addiction in 2021. Survey results show that 53.1% of the respondents believed that parents should also be educated on online behavior instead of only focusing on minors. The lack of parental guidance is one of the main obstacles that minors face in terms of being educated on online behavior. Protecting and educating children requires collective efforts from families, schools and companies.

The report also points out that the video game job market in China became highly competitive in 2021 as market competition intensified and companies expanded. Game companies offered salaries above the industry average to compete for talents.
